Behind every show that runs on time and runs safely is a technical production team. IIED’s MA in Technical Production is a two-year, full-time event production course in Mumbai that trains you to turn a creative idea into a show that can be built, powered, rigged and run. You learn staging and stage machinery, rigging and load calculation, power and generators, sound, lighting and video systems, safety, logistics and site management — and graduate with a professional portfolio, a live public production and real industry internship experience.

Learn to Build, Power and Run
Every Kind of Live Show

Design decides what a show should look like. Technical production decides whether it can be built, hung, powered and run — safely, on time and on budget. This course builds those skills in order: the live-event industry, health and safety, staging and rigging; then power, sound, lighting and video systems, production planning and logistics; and in Year 2, large-scale event delivery, special effects and pyrotechnics, automation, budgeting and production business.

In Semester 2 you complete a supervised internship with a production house, technical vendor, venue or event company. By the end of Year 2 you deliver your own major production before a live public audience — your portfolio centrepiece as a Technical Director or Production Manager.

What is an MA in Technical Production?

An MA in Technical Production is a two-year postgraduate programme that trains you to deliver live events and shows safely and on time. At IIED, it covers concerts, festivals, corporate events, weddings, exhibitions, theatre, film, TV and broadcast. You learn health and safety, staging and rigging, power and generators, sound, lighting and video systems, planning and logistics, and production management — then apply it all to real productions.

Why Technical Production Matters in Live Events

A show can look perfect on paper and still fail on the day — a truss that cannot take the load, a generator that is too small, a crew that arrives too late. Technical production is the discipline that prevents this. It decides how a show is built, powered, rigged and run, and it keeps crew and audiences safe. That is why every concert, award night, wedding and broadcast needs a trained technical team.

MA in Technical Production Course Highlights

  • Safety first: risk assessment, method statements, fire, crowd and emergency planning
  • Staging & rigging: stage machinery, truss, hoists, load calculation and a mandatory rigging competence check
  • Power: distribution, generators and on-site energy planning
  • Systems integration: sound, lighting, video, LED and show networks working as one
  • Planning & logistics: schedules, crewing, transport and site management
  • Documentation: technical drawings in AutoCAD and Vectorworks, and complete production books
  • Advanced practice: large-scale events, special effects, pyrotechnics and automation
  • Business skills: production budgeting, costing and consultancy
  • Indian Knowledge System: Indian stagecraft and mass-gathering production traditions
  • Capstone: a live public production and a research dissertation

Build a Career in Technical Production
